Dr. Neumann was born July 9, 1915, in Granite, OK, a son of Ferdinand and Regina Stickel Neumann. He attended public schools in Greer County, OK, and received bachelors and masters degrees from Oklahoma State University. He married Lorena Peterman on June 12, 1938, in Stillwater, OK. She survives. He also is survived by 2 brothers, Wilmer of Fort Walton, FL, and Clarence of Spring, TX, and 15 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.
Dr. Neumann was a vocational agriculture instructor at Cooperton High School in Oklahoma and was head of the Agricultural Department at Cameron State College in Lawton, OK, from 1941 to 1944. He then served as the county extension agent in Comanche County, OK, for 1 year and was an assistant professor of animal sciences at the University of Arkansas for 2 years.
In 1947, Dr. Neumann enrolled at the University of Illinois and received the PhD degree in animal nutrition and physiology in 1949. While working toward the doctorate, he was a graduate assistant in 1947 and a Rockefeller Foundation fellow in 1948.
Dr. Neumann returned to the University of Arkansas as professor of animal nutrition. In 1950, he joined the staff at the University of Illinois as associate professor and then professor in the Department of Animal Sciences. From 1953 to 1964, Professor Neumann was head of the universitys beef cattle division.
In 1964, Dr. Neumann was selected to head the combined Department of Animal, Range, and Wildlife Sciences at New Mexico State University. In 1971, he returned to the University of Illinois as professor of animal sciences and retired in 1976. He served as interim department head in 19851986.
Dr. Neumann authored numerous scientific papers and journal articles. His college textbook, Beef Cattle, was published in 8 editions by John Wiley & Sons and translated into Spanish and Japanese. He served as consultant in beef cattle nutrition and production in Ecuador, Paraguay, Mexico, Italy, British Honduras, and South Africa.
He was elected to the Animal Science Hall of Fame at Oklahoma State University and was made fellow of the American Society of Animal Science. Dr. Neumann was named honorary member of the Hoof and Horn Chapters of the National Block and Bridle Club at the University of Illinois and New Mexico State University and was made an honorary state farmer by the New Mexico State Future Farmers of America.
He was a member of the American Association for Agricultural Science and Registry of Certified Animal Scientists, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, American Society of Animal Science, Alpha Tau Alpha, Alpha Zeta, Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta, and a Paul Harris Fellow of Urbana Rotary Club. A founding member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Urbana, he served as elder and in various other offices.
Professor and Mrs. Neumann established several scholarships/fellowships at Illinois, New Mexico, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Many students have benefited greatly from their generosity.
