LETTER

Letter to the Editor

Steven J. Moeller, PhD

The Ohio State University, 122 Animal Science, 2029 Fyffe Court, Columbus, OH 43210

I am writing this letter in response to the Letter to the Editor written by Neil DeBuse regarding the National Pork Producers Council-sponsored Maternal Line Genetic Evaluation Program results, as published in the Journal of Animal Science (82:41–53, 2004)[Abstract/Free Full Text] .

Contrary to the assertion in his Letter to the Editor, Neil DeBuse has not communicated with me or my institution. In addition, Neil DeBuse has not provided the corresponding author or coauthors with data corrections or documentation that was approved by Newham Hybrids indicating that the original information provided to the Genetics Program Committee of the National Pork Producers Council was incorrect and that would support the comments contained in his Letter to the Editor. If such data were supplied to the leadership of the Journal of Animal Science and the American Society of Animal Science, as stated in the DeBuse Letter to the Editor, these data have not been communicated or provided to the corresponding author of the manuscript.

The genetic line identification reported in the manuscript (82:41–53, 2004) represents the information provided by Newsham Hybrids in relation to their company’s agreed upon expectations and commitments for participation in the National Pork Producers Council’s Maternal Line Genetic Evaluation Program. The results of the research represent committee, genetic supplier participant, industry, and peer-reviewed evaluations that led to the acceptance and publication of the article in the Journal. In the absence of evidence supplied directly by Newsham Hybrids, which documents that the original data supplied are indeed inaccurate, the information and results published represent the findings and conclusions drawn by the authors using the information supplied. Unless changes of genetic definitions are approved by Newsham Hybrids, the authors have no basis for altering their publication.

Finally, a thorough review was previously conducted by The Ohio State University and Iowa State University, and it was determined that no wrongdoing or academic misconduct existed in reference to the Journal, 82:41–53, 2004. Additionally, these findings were thoroughly reviewed by the Journal. Therefore, unless Newsham Hybrids provides additional official information to the authors, no other actions are warranted.

Respectfully submitted,

Received for publication August 31, 2007.
