Editorial: The response of the Society and Journal to accusations of scientific misconduct

In this issue of the Journal of Animal Science, you will find a Letter to the Editor from James R. Males and Michael L. Galyean. This letter was written at the request of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Animal Science (publisher of the Journal).

The purpose of the letter is to inform the membership of the Society, the readership of the Journal, and the public at-large of the response of the Society’s and the Journal’s leadership to accusations of scientific misconduct involving 2 papers on swine genetics published in the Journal of Animal Science in 2003 and 2004.

We thank Dr. Males and Dr. Galyean for their letter, which has clarified the process used to evaluate this issue, and which we believe was presented very professionally and with fairness to all of the parties involved.
