Rat Feeding Tests with Milk Obtained from Cows Fed Toxic Cottonseed Meal

Abstract

A sample of hexane extracted cottonseed meal which was known to be toxic.to male weanling rats, was fed to two cows for a period of one week. The milk collected from these cows was fed to weanling male rats to determine whether significant amounts of the toxic substances occurring in the cottonseed meal had been transmitted into the milk. Feeding the milk as an exclusive diet to weanling rats for a period of eight weeks failed to reveal any indication of toxicity. Milk containing a very low level of the toxic constituents on the other hand was found to be toxic to rats of the same age. Therefore it can be concluded that the toxicity associated with improperly processed cottonseed meal cannot be transmitted into the milk of the dairy cow receiving the toxic meal. This does not preclude the possibility that still other factors may be transmitted into the milk which might provoke an allergic reaction particularly in the human consuming the milk.
