The Relation of the Carotene Content of Range Forage to the Vitamin A Requirement of Breeding Cows1

W. E. Watkins and J. H. Knox

New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts2

Abstract

The blood carotene, Vitamin A and forage carotene values have been presented for Hereford breeding cows grazing on a typical Southern New Mexico range and covers an interval of four and one-half years. The blood carotene of these cows when compared to existing statements of requirements seems to indicate that a Vitamin A deficiency might occur only in case of prolonged drouth or extremely abnormal, conditions. This type of range produces certain plants which usually remain green throughout the fall, winter and spring seasons; these plants seem to have assisted, along with some of the grasses, in providing carotene to meet the requirements of these beef cows.
