Influence of Estrogen Alone and in Conjunction with Pregnant Mare Serum in Anestrous Ewes1, 2,

George W. Vander Noot, Ralph P. Reece and William C. Skelley

New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station

Abstract

Of 14 ewes injected subcutaneously with 1.4 mg. of estradiol dipropionate, 11 mated within 4 days and one lambed; estradiol was relatively ineffective in inducing estrus. The oral administration of 20 mg. of the dimethyl ether of hexestrol failed to induce estrus. No evidence was obtained that would indicate that estrogen treatment will initiate the estrouscycle in anestrous ewes.

Of 19 ewes receiving estrogen 15 to 17 days prior to a single injection of 250 rat units of PMS, 6 mated and lambed.
