Genetic Parameters for Carcass Traits in Hereford Bulls

Data from 824 Hereford bulls were used to estimate genetic parameters among live animal measures and carcass traits. Ninety-five sires were represented. Multiple-trait restricted maximum likelihood (REML) programs accounting for relationships were used in estimating heritabilities and correlations among 205-d weaning weight (WEANWT), postweaning gain (GAIN), ultrasonic backfat (FAT), slaughter weight (SLTWT), hot carcass weight (CARCWT), rib-eye area (REA), fat thickness (RIND), marbling (MARBLE) and predicted yield grade (YIELD) and cutability (CUT). Heritability estimates ranged from low to moderate for WEANWT (.12), GAIN (.44), FAT (.24), SLTWT (.41), CARCWT (.31), REA (.28), MARBLE (.33), YIELD (.24) and CUT (.23). Genetic correlations of WEANWT and GAIN with REA and MARBLE were moderately high (.43 to .71). Selection for WEANWT would be expected to increase carcass fat (rg = .49), whereas selection for GAIN would result in no change (rg = .05). FAT was positively associated with RIND (.46), REA (.13), MARBLE (.21) anZYIELD (.18), but not with CUT (-.20). Thus, selection for decreased backfat may lead to undesirable changes in marbling and rib-eye area.
