Midwestern Section ASAS 1989 Younger Animal Scientist Award—Extension

Abstract

A native of New York, Mark Russell was born in Glens Falls, on January 7, 1953. A 10-year 4-H member, he assisted on the family farm as well as with the family boarding and training stable for horses. He received the B.S. degree in Animal Sciences from Cornell University in 1975 and the M.S. in Animal Nutrition and Ph.D. degree in Animal Nutrition from the University of Illinois in 1979 and 1982, respectively.

Dr. Russell was Animal Science Extension Horse Specialist at the University of Illinois from 1975 through 1979. He joined the Purdue University Animal Sciences Faculty in 1982 as an Assistant Professor and Extension Horse Specialist. Mark Russell was promoted to Associate Professor in 1987.

Mark's extension education responsibilities are directed toward improving management procedures vital to the horse industry and increasing the selection of athletic ability of horses through the application of genetic and nutritional principles. He works closely with industry organizations through jointly sponsored programs and uses traditional extension meetings as well as closed-circuit television and mass media contacts to stimulate the level of awareness and knowledge in management practices to benefit horseowners and horses in Indiana.
