Abstract

Dr. Alfred (Fred) R. Menino, Jr. was born and reared in Hilo, Hawaii. Because of an interest in animals, he attended the University of Hawaii-Hilo, where he obtained his B.A. in biology in 1976. As an undergraduate, he participated in research on a shell lesion disease in freshwater shrimp. After finishing his B.A., Dr. Menino transferred to Washington State University to begin graduate studies in embryo physiology with Dr. R. W. Wright, Jr. He finished requirements for the M.S. degree in 1978 and for the Ph.D. degree in 1981.

He returned to the University of Hawaii-Hilo in 1981 in a teaching and research position. At Hilo he initiated research dealing with uterine factors involved in hatching mammalian embryos, which is the process exerted by the embryo to shed the zona pellucida. During this period he also engaged in research investigating plasminogen activator production by the embryo and the effects of various proteases on zona pellucida integrity and development.
