Western Section ASAS 1989 Distinguished Teacher Award

Abstract

Dr. Everett L. Martin is a native of Oklahoma and received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Oklahoma State University. From the outset of his professional career at Washington State University in 1970, Dr. Martin established himself as a superior teacher and advisor of students in animal sciences, specifically in the field of meat sciences and live animal and carcass evaluation.

He developed the first combination live animal and carcass evaluation course ever offered at Washington State University. Starting in 1970, when video equipment was relatively new, he pioneered the use of videotapes to enhance the learning environment of students in his live animal and carcass evaluation course. He videotaped the live market animals each year before slaughter and played back this footage at the time the carcasses were presented to the class and evaluated. He still uses this technique today. Dr. Martin alternately has taught live animal and carcass evaluation and basic meat science for 34 consecutive semesters at Washington State University.
