Western Section ASAS 1988 Young Scientist Award

Abstract

Michael L. Galyean was born September 2, 1951 at Bentonville, Arkansas. In 1967, his parents moved to northern New Mexico and Mike completed high school at Grants, NM in 1969. Mike married Charlotte Jarvis in 1973 and they now have three sons.

Dr. Galyean started his B.S. training in Animal Science at New Mexico State University in 1969. While earning his degree, Mike worked in the Department's Nutrition Laboratory, where he developed a keen appreciation for animal metabolism research and also cultivated his knowledge of practical animal husbandry as a part-time student employee at the University's 100 section College Ranch. These additional activities did not hamper his course-work performance (3.94 GPA) for his B.S. degree, which he completed in 1973. Dr. Galyean earned his M.S. (1974) and Ph.D. (1977) at Oklahoma State University under the direction of Drs. Don Wagner and Fredric N. Owens.
