Southern Section ASAS 1988 Young Animal Scientist Award

Abstract

Stephen B. Smith was born January 9, 1950 in Bakersfield, California, and has been married to the former Mary Lou French for 16 years. Steve graduated from Kern Valley High School in Lake Isabella, California in 1968 and attended California State College, Long Beach, and Bakersfield City College on scholarships until he was drafted into the army in 1971. Steve spent twelve months in Viet Nam and was discharged from the service with honors after attaining the rank of Sergeant E-5. Steve returned to college in 1973, and in 1975 graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. In 1979, he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Metabolic Physiology from the University of California, Davis. Steve accepted a position in 1979 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in cooperation with the Ruminant Nutrition Unit of the U.S.D.A. Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, Nebraska. In 1981, he joined the staff of the Meats Research Unit of the U.S.D.A. Meat Animal Research Center as a Research Chemist.
