Southern Section ASAS 1988 Extension Award

Abstract

Dr. Donald R. Gill has served as Extension Animal Nutritionist at Oklahoma State University since 1966. Don's dedicated work has brought national recognition as a beef industry extension specialist, educational leader, creative scientist and prolific writer.

Leadership with a purpose is evident in Dr. Gill's service to the Great Plains Agricultural Council. His vision of producing and exchanging publications on a regional basis led to the Great Plains Beef Handbook. The success of the handbook stimulated similar regional or national projects for beef, sheep and swine.

Dr. Gill has planned and developed many national conferences on issues of industry importance. Among these are conferences on Preconditioning of Beef Cattle, Wheat in Livestock Feeds, Ethanol Byproducts, Protein Nutrition and Feed Intake.

Dr. Gill was a leader in conceiving and leading one of the most successful extension programs ever developed in Oklahoma, which he coined "The Oklahoma Gold Program." The program was an educational promotion to inform beef cattle producers with summer stocker programs of the benefits of providing supplements with ionophores.
