The American Society of Animal Science Award in Nutrition Research

Donor: American Feed Industry Association 1988

Abstract

Austin J. Lewis is a native of Dorset, England. He received a B.Sc. degree in Agriculture from the University of Reading, England in 1967 and a Ph.D. degree in Applied Biochemistry and Nutrition from the University of Nottingham, England in 1971.

Dr. Lewis accepted a postdoctoral position at Iowa State University in 1971 and began a research program on the amino acid nutrition of swine. Dr. Lewis continued this research program during a one-year research position at the University of Nebraska; subsequently, he spent two years on the faculty of the University of Alberta. Since 1977 he has been a faculty member of the University of Nebraska.

Some of Dr. Lewis' first accomplishments were to establish the lysine, tryptophan and threonine requirements of sows during lactation. During the course of this research, he characterized the significance of plasma amino acids and plasma urea concentrations for assessing amino acid requirements, and he developed an automated fluorometric method to measure tryptophan in plasma.
