Abstract

The American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) is in a major period of growth and transition. Since replacing the Executive Secretary with the Executive Director (an animal professional) and moving the AAALAC office to FASEB campus in Bethesda, MD, in the fall of 1986, AAALAC's profile in the Washington area has increased in line with the importance of animal care and use matters for users of animals in the agricultural, biomedical, and wildlife sciences. The AAALAC Executive Committee (on which the ASAS representative is now serving for the second year) forms the nucleus of the group within the Association now engaged in a longrange planning process for AAALAC. Among other items of high priority in this process are plans for AAALAC to expand its activities from the care and use of animals by biomedical scientists, which has been the Association's traditional focus, to animal care and use in other areas, including the animal sciences.
