Abstract

Announcements of new books should be sent to the Technical Editor, Journal of Animal Science, 309 W. Clark St., Champaign, IL 61820. The charge is $50 (minimum) for a 2-inch, one-column announcement plus $25 for each additional inch (or portion of an inch). Announcements will be edited; ordinarily they will not exceed 2 inches.

"Matching Ruminant Production Systems with Available Resources in the Tropics and Sub-tropics" (ISBN 0-9588-290-1), by T. R. Preston and R. A. Leng, encompasses the authors' approach to appropriate technology within the concept of matching ruminant production systems with the available resources. The book discusses development of animal production systems and comprehensively reviews ruminant digestion and metabolism, manipulation of feed and the rumen to improve production, feed intake, guidelines for development of feeding systems, results from applied livestock production enterprises, ruminant production from pasture, nutrition/parasite interactions, application of principles of feeding and perspectives. There are approximately 300 compact pages (approx. 800 words/page), 110 figures and 110 tables with reference to over 500 scientific publications.
