Walter R. Harvey was born June 19, 1919 in Tucumcari, New Mexico, where his father worked on the Bell Ranch. He was raised near Electra, Texas, and on a farm near Rush Springs, Oklahoma. He graduated from Cameron Junior College at Lawton, Oklahoma, and received the B.S. degree from Oklahoma State University (1942). He entered the Army in 1942 and advanced from Private to Captain in the Medical Administrative Corps. He obtained the M.S. (1947) and Ph.D. (1949) degrees under the direction of Dr. J. L. Lush at Iowa State University. Dr. Harvey was an Associate Professor in the Dairy Science Department at the University of Idaho from 1950 to 1954, where he coached the dairy cattle judging team. He then moved to Beltsville, Maryland to become head of the Livestock Staff of Biometrical Services. In 1964, Dr. Harvey joined The Ohio State University, first as a Julius Stone Visiting Professor and then as a full Professor.
