The following two papers were presented at the General Session of the Seventy-Eighth Annual Meeting of the American Society of Animal Science at Kansas State University, Manhattan, July 30, 1986. The theme of the General Session was "Hatch Act CentennialLivestock Research, Past and Future."
The Act of 1887, establishing state agricultural experiment stations, known as the Hatch Act, became law March 2, 1887. The Act was named for William H. Hatch, who was chairman of the Agricultural Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives when the Act was approved.
The first paper, by Dr. D. C. Acker and Dr. B. A. Koch, summarizes significant accomplishments in livestock research during the past 100 yr; the second paper, by Dr. Max Lennon, presents challenges in animal science for the next 100 yr.
