Abstract

Leslie Ellsworth Card was born August 10, 1893, and died January 2, 1986. He was married to Eva Louise Garnsey, a Cornell classmate who passed away in 1985. They had three children: Mary C. Yarnell, Mesa, Arizona; Helen C. Hay, Madison, Wisconsin and James G. Card, Silver Spring, Maryland; seven grand-children; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dr. Card received his B.S. (1914) and Ph.D. (1922) degrees from Cornell University, becoming the fifth person in the United States to earn a doctorate in Poultry Husbandry. He then assumed the headship of the Poultry Division in the Animal Science Department at the University of Illinois, where he was named head of the Department of Animal Science in 1947. In 1957, Dr. Card was named group leader of the University's team in India and advisor to the Secretary of Agriculture, Uttar Pradesh State. Dr. Card served on the faculty of the University of Illinois for 38 yr. After his retirement in 1960, the University recalled him for several assignments in experiment, extension and international programs.
