Report from ASAS Representative to the Society for Range Management

Abstract

The 39th Annual Meeting of the Society for Range Management (SRM) was held in Orlando, FL, February 10–14, 1986. Registration was 1200.

Mr. Ed McKinnon, President, a rancher from Calgary, Canada, opened the plenary session. Don Butler, President of the National Cattle-man's Association talked on the future of the American cattle industry. Peter Meyers, Assistant Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment, USDA, and others discussed the history and future of range management and ranging. Much of the discussion centered on Florida rangelands.

Five symposia were held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting. The symposium on "Statistical Analysis and Modeling of Grazing Systems" might be of special interest to animal scientists. Copies are available from the SRM headquarters, 2760 West Fifth Avenue, Denver, CO 80204.

Seventy papers were given in concurrent sessions on range-animal nutrition and grazing management. Overall interest in grazing-animal behavior remains high.
