Southern Section ASAS 1985 Distinguished Service Award

Abstract

The 1985 recipient of the Southern Section, American Society of Animal Science Distinguished Service Award is Otho M. Hale. Dr. Hale was born July 15, 1921 in South Alabama and reared on a general farm in Monroe County. He enrolled at Auburn University in the fall of 1939. His college education was interrupted by 42 months of service in the United States Air Force. After receiving a B.S. degree from Auburn University in 1948 he taught vocational agriculture at Uriah, Alabama. He obtained the M.S. degree from Auburn University in 1950 and three years later received the Ph.D. from Oregon State University.

Dr. Hale joined the faculty of the University of Georgia, Coastal Plain Station, in 1953 and began a distinguished and productive carrer in swine research. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1958 and to Professor in 1967. Dr. Hale pioneered research in Georgia delineating the importance of adequate nutrition, performance testing and carcass improvement of swine.
