Midwestern Section ASAS 1984 Younger Animal Scientist Research Award

Abstract

The 1984 recipient of the Midwestern Section Younger Animal Scientist Research Award is George C. Fahey, Jr. He was born November 12, 1949, in Weston, West Virginia, and grew up on a 1,600-acre, general livestock and forage crops farm. After graduation from high school with high honors in 1967, he entered West Virginia University where he majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry. After receiving the A.B. degree in 1971, he enrolled in the Graduate School at West Virginia University and received the M.S. degree in Agricultural Biochemistry in 1974 and the Ph.D. degree in Animal Nutrition in 1976.

Dr. Fahey is a comparative nutritionist and is well-known in the area of forage and fiber utilization by ruminant and nonruminant animals. One area that Dr. Fahey and his graduate students have addressed in comprehensive fashion is plant lignin/phenolic metabolism. Using a number of analytical techniques, they monitored the metabolism of lignin and phenolic compounds passing through the digestive system of both ruminants and nonruminants.
