Elwyn R. Miller was born December 10, 1923 in Edon, Ohio and was raised on a crop and livestock farm. He studied chemical engineering at Tri State University before joining the U.S. Navy in 1944 where he specialized in aviation electronics. After the war, he completed a B.S. Degree (1948) at Michigan State University in agriculture and biology and taught those subjects at the W. K. Kellogg High School from 1948 to 1951. He then returned to Michigan State University for graduate studies under Dr. Jacob A. Hoefer, completed his Ph.D. on nutrient requirements of the baby pig in 1956 and immediately joined the Animal Science faculty.
Dr. Miller's research on nutrition of the pig has brought him national and international recognition. He has concentrated on nutrient requirements of baby pigs, baby pig anemia, normal hematology, relation of nutrition and immunology in young pigs, composition of sow's milk, mineral requirements of pigs for growth, reproduction and lactation, bioavailability of minerals and evaluation of underutilized feedstuffs for swine.
