Protein Supplementation of Ammoniated Roughages. I. Corncobs Supplemented with a Blood Meal-Corn Gluten Meal Mixture — Lamb Studies1

Abstract

A trial was conducted to investigate rates of passage and rate of solka floe neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestion from dacron bags suspended in the rumen in wethers fed either 0, 2, 3 or 4 g NH3/100 g dry matter (DM) treated corncobs. Additionally, two trials were conducted to investigate dry matter intake (DMI), apparent dry matter digestibility (DMD) and N balance of wethers fed three levels of a blood meal-corn gluten meal mixture (BM-CGM) and either 0, 2, 3 or 4 g NH3/100 g DM treated corncobs. Rate of paniculate passage from the rumen increased quadratically (P=.09) and rate of solka floe NDF digestion from darcon bags in the rumen increased linearly (P=.08) with level of ammoniation. Rumen fluid pH, rate of fluid passage, fluid volume and particulate mass were unaffected by level of ammoniation. Ammoniation quadratically increased (P<.02) DMI and linearly decreased (P<.02) DMD at ad libitum intake, while a cubic main effect (P<.01) was noted for DMD at restricted intake. The BM-CGM level linearly (P<.01) increased DMI and DMD at ad libitum intake and quadratic decrease (P<.06) in urniary N excretion was noted with BM-CGM, and was unaffected by ammoniation. Linear BM-CGM x ammonia interactions (P<.06) were noted for fecal N excretion and N retention, which appears to indicate the BM-CGM reduced fecal N excretion and thereby increased N retention of the ammoniated corncob-fed lambs.
