The 1984 recipient of the Northeastern Section Young Scientist Award is a native of the Northeast, born in Maine and raised in New York. After graduation from Cornell University in 1969, he headed west for graduate studies at Iowa State University. His first faculty position was still farther west at the University of California. In 1980. Dr. E. John Pollak returned to the northeast and to Cornell University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science. His training, research, and teaching are in animal breeding and statistics.
Dr. Pollak carries on an active research program in both dairy and beef cattle breeding. He and Dr. R. L. Quaas; a frequent collaborator and the 1982 recipient of this award, recently received a major grant from the American Simmental Association to develop best linear unbiased prediction procedures for genetic evaluation of both bulls and cows. Two of his important research contributions include development of improved genetic evaluation procedures by more appropriate grouping of animals according to prior selection on their ancestors and the estimation of the genetic parameters needed for implementing multiple trait-milk, fat and protein-evaluations of dairy sires.
