Earl M. Kesler was born in Dunmore, West Virginia on December 3, 1920. He received the diploma in Agriculture in 1941 from Potomac State College and the B.S. in Agriculture 1943 from West Virginia University. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the United States Army Air Force as a navigator in a heavy bombardment group of the Fifteenth Air Force, stationed in Italy. His plane having been shot down, he spent 10 mo as a prisoner of war (POW) in Hungarian and German hospitals and POW camps. Discharged with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for military service.
Entering graduate school at Pennsylvania State University in 1946, he was awarded the M.S. degree in 1948 and appointed Instructor in the Department of Dairy Science. Upon receiving the Ph.D. degree in Dairy Science with a minor in Biochemistry in 1951, he was promoted to Assistant Professor and subsequently to Professor in 1964.
