Comparison of In Vivo and in Vitro Digestibility of Forages by Elk

Abstract

In vivo organic matter digestability (OMD) and intake (OMI) of nine forages by elk were determined with conventional digestion trials. In vitro OMD was determined on these same forages using elk, sheep and cattle inocula. Data were analyzed to determine the ability of the in vitro technique to estimate in vivo digestability of forages by elk. In vitro organic matter disappearance had a low coefficient of determination (R2=.37) with in vivo OMD. Higher coefficients of determination were obtained for OMI (R2 = .68) and digestible organic matter intake (DOMI), (R2 = .68). For the diets studied, in vitro digestibility was more acceptable for a relative ranking of nutritive value rather than as a predictor of absolute organic matter digestibility or intake. Interspecific comparisons indicated that inocula from sheep and cattle predicted elk in vivo OMD (R2 =.38 to .60, Sy•x = 4.16 to 5.17), OMI (R2 = .60 to .82, Sy•x = 7.13 to 10.86), and DOMI (R2 = .70 to .87, Sy•x = 5.01 to 7.46) in elk with similar accuracy as inocula from elk (P<.05). For forages not influenced by leaching, cell contents and cellulose provided an accurate index to elk in vivo OMD, OMI and DOMI (R2 = .65 to .85).
