Abstract
The rate of lipolysis as influenced by hormonal treatment was measured in subcutaneous adipose tissue of cattle of varying frame size. Cattle were scored for frame size according to the USDA feeder grade standards and fed an 80% concentrate finishing diet. Adipose tissue biopsies were obtained after 166, 194 and 214 d on feed and the rate of lipolysis in isolated fat cells measured by monitoring glycerol release. Hormonal treatments were epinephrine, insulin and epinephrine plus insulin. Epinephrine increased (P<.05) the rate of lipolysis compared with basal levels for cattle in all frame sizes. Insulin had no effect on lipolytic rates (P>.05); however, insulin reduced the influence of epinephrine on lipolytic rates. The rate of lipolysis was greater (P<.05) in large frame (LF) cattle than in medium-(MF) and small-framed (SF) cattle. No change in lipolysis occurred as time on feed increased. Large frame cattle had lower (P<.05) carcass lipid percentage than MF and SF cattle. Small frame cattle deposited lipid at a greater (P<.05) rate than the other two groups during the feeding period.
