Abstract

William Ernest Carroll was born on November 8, 1882 in Orderville, Utah, and died October 6, 1982, just one month prior to the 100th anniversary of his birth. Throughout a long and active career he exemplified personal and professional qualities that merit lasting admiration and respect. He contributed much to the academic development of Animal Science from the early formative period.

He was graduated from Brigham Young University in 1907 and from Utah Agricultural College at Logan in 1909. He obtained M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Illinois in 1911 and 1914, respectively, where he was the first student in the then new field of Animal Nutrition.

Following the completion of graduate study, he was called to the Utah Agricultural College staff where he served effectively until 1924 except for military service for the period 1918–19 as a Captain in the Sanitary Corps in the Army of the United States.
