Northeastern Section ASAS Distinguished Service Award, 1982

Abstract

Paul A. Putnam is Director, Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Maryland. He was born on a farm in Vermont in 1930. Dr. Putnam earned his B.S. degree in agriculture from the University of Vermont in 1952, an M.S. from Washington State University in 1954 and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1957. Immediately after graduation, Dr. Putnam began his service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service at Beltsville, Maryland, as a research animal scientist. During the next 25 years he advanced to increasingly responsible positions of leadership and in 1980 he was appointed to his present position, Director, Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. During his career as a scientist and research leader in animal science he has authored more than 80 articles, with more than 38 different coauthors. His publications range from articles on fundamental ruminant research to applied nutrition reports, contributing scientific knowledge on physical form of rations for cattle, on level of concentrate in rations, on use of chromic oxide as a digestibility marker, on quantitating salivary secretion of cattle, and on feeding behavior of cattle.
