Abstract
Daily estrous activity of 50 Finnish Land-race (Finn) [
Finn (F)
Dorset (D)
Ram-bouillet (R)] crossbred and 50 Morlam ewes for each of 2 yr (25 of each breed type/yr) was monitored to determine differences between the breed types for estrous characteristics. Ewes were allowed to remain nonpregnant and were exposed daily to four vasectomized rams wearing a marking harness. Significant breed type x month differences were noted for estrous activity. A greater number of Morlam ewes exhibited estrous activity in August, but more Finn cross ewes exhibited estrus in February, March, April and May. The number of ewes cycling in the remaining months did not differ between breeds. Mean Julian date for first estrus following the anestrous period was earlier (P<.01) for the Morlam (249 ± 2.2 d) than for the Finn cross ewes (262 ± 2.3 d). Mean Julian date of last estrus for Finn cross ewes (109 ± 4.4 d) was later (P<.01) than the Morlam (72 ± 4.2 d ). The number of days of estrous activity was greater (P<.01) for the Finn cross (211 ± 5.0) than for the Morlam (187 ± 5.0).
