Utilization of Energy of Rice and Rice Bran by Young Pigs1

Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Esperiment Station2, Ames 50011

Abstract

Two comparative slaughter experiments were conducted to determine the utilization of energy of rice and rice bran by young swine. All pigs were fed a corn-soybean meal basal diet at 3% of body weight daily and, in addition, rice or rice bran was fed at 0, 1, or 2% of body weight daily. Rice fed in addition to the basal diet improved gains (P<.01) and feed to gain ratios (P<.05). The digestibility of dry matter increased linearly (P<.05), but digestibilities of N and energy were not significantly affected by additional increments of rice. The energy values of the diets were not affected (P>.05) by feeding rice. The addition of rice brain improved daily gain (P<.05), but did not affect (P>.05) feed to gain ratios. Digestion coefficients for dry matter, N and energy decreased linearly (P>.01) with increasing increments of dietary rice bran. Digestible and metabolizable energy values of thediets decreased linearly (P<.01) with increasng levels of rice bran. Energy utilization of the diets was partitioned into the contribution of the basal diet and that of the rice or rice bran. The average energy values for rice and rice bran in Kcal/g of dry matter were, respectively: gross energy, 4.38, 4.65; digestible energy, 3.70, 3.88; metabolizable energy, 3.58, 2.71; N-corrected metabolizable energy, 3.35, 3.50 and net energy, 2.51, 2.03.
