Abstract

Production data from 81,012 cow years and 497 ranch years were compiled in a series of producer-completed surveys. Mean calving rate of cows exposed for breeding was 87.2%. Calving rate differed (P<.05) with herd type and cow condition. Mean weaning rate was 78.1%. The difference between calving and weaning rates (9.1%) reflected preweaning death loss. Herd type and cow condition influenced (P<.01) weaning rates. Herds with later mean calving dates tended to have lower (P<.05) weaning rates. Cooperating herds had a mean weaning weight of 212.8 kg, and herd type (P<.01), region of state (P<.05) and creep feeding (P<.05) were important sources of variation. Mean net weaning weight (kg of calf weaned/cow exposed) was 166.2 kg. Herd type and sex of calf affected (P<.05) net weights. Crossbred commercial herds had a mean weight 14.6 kg higher than that of straightbred commercial herds and 14.1 kg heavier than that of seedstock herds. Producers reporting only bull calf weaning weights obtained a mean net weaning weight 8.9 kg higher than that obtained by producers reporting only steer weights and 59.7 kg higher than that obtained by those reporting only heifer weaning weights.
