Effect of Stage of Maturity on the Nutritive Value of Whole-Plant Sugarcane Preserved as Silage1,2,

L. Kung, Jr.3 and R. W. Stanley

University of Hawaii, Honolulu 96822

Abstract

Fresh, whole-plant sugarcane harvested at 6-, 9-, 12-, 15- and 24-mo of age showed a significant linear increase in in vitro dry matter digestibilities. Unlike fresh sugarcane, ensiled sugarcane harvested at comparable maturities decreased in in vivo dry matter digestibility (in sheep) with increasing age. Sugarcane silage was significantly lower in total digestible nutrients than corn silage. Sugarcane did not lend itself to ensiling because of large losses of dry matter and high levels of ethonal.
