Abstract
Field records provided by the North American Limousin Foundation performance testing program were edited into two data sets and analyzed to determine the importance of the sire x breed of dam and age of dam x breed of dam interactions. The data sets contained records on 50% Limousin calves with Hereford or Angus dams. Significant interactions were found between sire and breed of dam for birth weight, preweaning average daily gain, adjusted 205-day weaning weight, yearling weight, adjusted 365-day weight and weight per day of age. The percentage of total variation accounted for by the interaction ranged from .2 for postweaning average daily gain to 1.7 for yearling weight. Percentages of total variation accounted for by the sire components ranged from 1.5 for postweaning average daily gain to 6.3 for birth weight. The correlation of breeding values for the same trait across breeds of dams ranged from .57 to .85. Estimates of heritability were reduced when the sire x breed of dam interaction was considered in the estimation procedure. Estimates of genetic correlations between traits tended to be increased when the interaction was taken into consideration. The age of dam x breed of dam interaction was significant for preweaning average daily gain, adjusted 205-day weaning weight, postweaning average daily gain and weight per day of age.
