Abstract

Equations for estimating the quantity of muscle of the young pig were developed from measurements on 48 crossbred pigs (23.6 to 44 kg body weight) representing four sire breeds. Six measurements were obtained for each pig; body weight (kilograms), average backfat thickness (centimeters), 10th rib loin depth (centimeters), body length (centimeters), ham circumference (centimeters) and sex. Pigs were slaughtered and body composition was determined by dissection and chemical analysis. Pigs averaged 32.6 kg body weight and 34.2% muscle. Prediction equations were developed by maximum R2 and backward elimination procedures. The most efficient equation for estimating quantity of muscle was: Muscle quantity (kg)= –13.15 + .24 (body weight) – 4.10 (back-fat)+ 2.29 (loin depth) + .20 (body length).
