Abstract
Inbreeding effects were estimated from records of Yorkshire pigs produced in a study designed to evaluate alternative techniques of selection for increased leanness. Litter and dam inbreeding effects on 16 litter preweaning traits and inbreeding effects of individual and dam on six individual postweaning traits were investigated. The preweaning and postweaning data sets included 549 and 2,327 observations, respectively. Although litter and particularly dam inbreeding effects were generally detrimental to preweaning performance and were in general agreement with literature estimates, these effects were not statistically significant. This situation was attributed primarily to the limited range of calculated inbreeding coefficients within year-parity-line subclasses. In-breeding-of-dam effects were generally less severe for litters out of second parity dams than for litters out of first parity dams. An alternative model was presented for evaluating individual and dam inbreeding effects on individual postweaning performance. Pooled estimates of individual inbreeding effects had a depressing effect on each postweaning trait. Partial regression coefficients, per 1% change in individual inbreeding, were –.27 ± .14 kg, –.0020 ± .0015 kg, –.0027 ± .0014 kg, –.0021 ± .0012 kg, –.032 ± .017% and –.11 ± .06 kg for 160-day weight, first period daily gain, second period daily gain, total daily gain, percentage lean cuts and weight of lean cuts, respectively. Pooled estimates of inbreeding-of-dam effects were nonsignificant for each postweaning trait.
