Robert J. Raleigh, Professor of Animal Science, was born in Stratford, Wisconsin on May 12, 1922. He was raised on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and entered military service with the United States Army in October 1942. After discharge from the service in December 1946 he worked as a crew boss on a commercial cattle ranch in Montana for a couple of years, then enrolled at Montana State University and received a B.S. degree in Animal Industry in 1952. He then attended Utah State University and from that institution obtained both the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Animal Nutrition in 1954 and 1959, respectively. During his stay at Utah State he worked as a Graduate Assistant, Research Assistant and Research Associate. His graduate research efforts at Utah State involved mineral deficiencies with range cattle and protein sources with varying protein, fat and diethylstilbestrol levels with lambs. Other experimental work included studies with cattle on crested wheatgrass and irrigated pastures, winter range nutrition studies with cattle and sheep, lamb fattening trials, metabolism and balance studies, insecticide studies with cattle, sheep and laboratory animals and fluorine toxicity studies with ruminants.
