Abstract

Marvin Koger was born May 18, 1915 in Coalgate, OK and raised in New Mexico on a cattle ranch. He graduated from New Mexico State University in 1939 and completed graduate degrees from Kansas State University (M.S.) in 1941 and the University of Missouri (Ph.D.) in 1943. In 1943 he joined the faculty of New Mexico State University in teaching and research where his animal breeding work was directed toward performance evaluation and methods of genetic improvement in beef production. While in New Mexico he was a charter member of the Western Regional Beef Cattle Breeding Technical Committee and was involved with sheep research and production. His research on adjustment procedures for beef cattle weaning weights lead to national attention of production testing. In 1951, he joined the faculty of the Animal Science Department, University of Florida. As coordinator of beef cattle breeding research in Florida his projects have involved scientists from many departments and had broad impact on our beef industry.
