Abstract

Irwin Allen Dyer

Irwin A. Dyer, Professor of Animal Science and Dean of the College of Agriculture at Texas A&I University, died Christmas Day, 1979, of amotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease.

Born in Dahlonega, GA, on February 8, 1921, Professor Dyer attended primary and secondary schools in his hometown. After graduation from high school in 1938 he attended Rabun Gap Jr. College for two years and West Georgia College for one year. He then entered the University of Georgia. He interrupted his undergraduate studies to serve as a line officer in the Navy for the next three years, including 20 months in the Pacific during WW II. After the war he returned to school and completed his B.S. in 1946 and an M.S. in 1947 at the University of Georgia. In 1950 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana.

Professor Dyer joined the faculty of the University of Georgia in 1950.
