Abstract
Urea (.5%), dried whole whey (1% and 2% DWW), sodium hydroxide (1% NaOH) and combinations of these additives were added to sunflower silage in laboratory silos. In vitro dry matter disappearance or digestibility (IVDMD) was improved by all additives except 1% DWW. The addition of DWW to urea-treated silage gave an additional improvement in IVDMD. Two percent DWW increased IVDMD more than 1% DWW both with and without added urea. Additional additives to NaOH-treated silage gave no additional improvement in IVDMD. Lactic acid concentrations and pH values of silages were within the ranges generally observed in good quality silage, with the exception of the elevated pH values observed with NaOH additions. This research indicated that the nutritive quality of sunflower silage can be improved by additions of DWW, urea and NaOH at the time of ensiling.
