Commercially Processing and Selling Poultry Waste as a Feed Ingredient1

David C. Hamblin2

Olson Farms, Inc., Sherman Oaks, CA 91413

Abstract

Considerable research has shown that dried poultry waste (DPW) can be used as a valuable ingredient in ruminant diets. However, little DPW has been processed and sold commercially. This paper documents the experiences of a commercial concern in the business of processing and selling DPW as a feed ingredient. Manure from cage layers was dried at a steady rate through single pass dehydrators at temperatures from 66 to 77 C for 30 minutes. Quality control was accomplished by routine sampling and analyses, accurate records of diets and medication of the layers producing the manure, knowledge of proper fly control and computer control during the drying process. Aflatoxin, pesticides, pathogens and antibiotics have not been a problem with DPW. Selling price for DPW has ranged from $42 to $72 per metric ton bulk.
