Abstract
Two single-reversal trials were conducted with beef steers to determine the effect of diethylstilbestrol (DES) ear implants (trial 1, eight steers) and to compare the effects of DES and Synovex-S ear implants (trial 2, 12 steers) on fasting respiratory exchange and heat production. In both trials, growth promotants DES and Synovex-S improved rate of gain and feed conversion and slightly increased heart rate consistent with previous reports. Total oxygen consumption per day, total carbon dioxide production per day and daily heat production per unit of metabolic size increased 2.8, 3.1 and 4.0%, respectively, when steers were implanted. There were no differences between treatments for fasting urine nitrogen and, therefore, no treatment differences in estimated heat production from the oxidation of protein tissue. The effects of DES and Synovex-S on fasting metabolic rate were not statistically significant. However, the data indicated a small increase in metabolic rate occurred when steers were given hormonal growth promotants, which suggests that hormonal growth promotants slightly increase maintenance requirements.
