AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE, SECTION T BUSINESS MEETING
The business meeting of the Section on Information, Computing and Communication-T, American Association for the Advancement of Science was held on January 4, 1979, during the AAAS Annual Meeting. Discussion concentrated on the possible role for Section T and the AAAS in the 1979 White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services (WHCL-IS). It was agreed that if a member of Section T was appointed to attend WHCLIS, that person should express the conviction of the group that emphasis on support for technology without the necessary underpinning of science and education is meaningless—"Support of technology for its own sake" should be avoided.
Preliminary results of a membership survey conducted in 1978 were reported. More members labeled themselves related most closely to computing than to information or communication, but the number was not greatly unbalanced in this direction.
A motion was also passed to convey to the AAAS Council the suggestion that a trial Open Forum be scheduled for the next AAAS meeting where members of the staff of Science would meet with AAAS members to discuss publications, policy and plans of the Association.
