Abstract

The incidence ovine progressive (OPP) in a naturally infected herd was determined for a 2-year period. Both breed and age of ewe were found to significantly influence the occurrence of the malady. Agar-gel immunodiffusion analyses of blood sera for precipitating antibodies indicated a positive reactivity ranging from lowest to highest in the following breed order: Hampshire, Suffolk, Rambouillet, Columbia and North Country Cheviot. Older ewes were observed to elicit an increased positive serum response. Procedures were developed for the establishment of an OPP free herd from the infected parental herd. Blood serum analysis of the noninfected herd for 4 consecutive years have revealed zero incidence of OPP.
