on Spermatogenesis, Spermatozoal Output, Seminal Quality, Testosterone Levels and Libido of Yearling Beef Bulls1 ,2,Animal Reproduction Laboratory, Colorado State University, Fort Collins 80523
Abstract
Fourteen yearling Hereford or Angus bulls were given 30 mg prostaglandin F2
; (PGF2
) intramuscularly prior to the collection of semen on each of 2 days per week for 10 weeks. Effects of PGF2
on spermatogenesis, spermatozoal output, seminal quality, libido and testosterone concentration in serum were assessed. Although the testosterone concentration in serum prepared from jugular blood increased approximately twofold after PGF2
, values for most other parameters did not differ due to PGF2
treatment. Thus, we concluded that PGF2
, at this dosage and frequency of administration, did not alter the reproductive capacity of bulls.
