Effect of Corn Silage and Turkey Litter on the Performance of Gestating Pony Mares and Weanlings

R. M. Jordan1,2

University of Minnesota, St. Paul

Abstract

The effects of feeding corn silage supplemented with pelleted turkey litter to 36 gestating pony mares and 12 weanlings were studied during a 2-year period. Supplementing corn silage with .21 kg to .26 kg of pelleted turkey litter per pony daily increased daily silage consumption in two of the three trials, significantly increased weight gains with mares and significantly reduced weight loss with 8-month-old ponies. Digestive difficulties were not encountered and no adverse effects on pregnancy occurred.
