Abstract

An experiment was conducted to study the effects of Silastic vaginal devices containing either estradiol-17ß, progesterone or progesterone + estradiol-17ß on estrus and luteinizing hormone (LH release in ovariectomized heifers. All heifers treated with a vaginal device that contained estradiol-17ß exhibited estrus and LH release, whereas none of those treated with devices that contained progesterone + estradiol-17ß exhibited estrus or LH release. This experiment demonstrates that progesterone blocks estrogen-induced estrus and LH release in ovariectomized heifers.
