Abstract
Data were obtained from 963 cow and 679 calf records including Herefords, Hereford x Angus, and Charolais x Hereford x Angus over a 4-year period. Eyelid pigmentation was negatively correlated (P<.01) with both incidence and severity of pinkeye in calves and cows. Hereford calves had lower pigmentation scores with both higher incidence and severity (P<.01) of pinkeye than 3/4 Hereford x 1/4 Angus. Each unit increase in incidence of pinkeye decreased (P<.10) calf preweaning gain by 7.2 g/day; likewise, each unit increase in severity reduced (P<.01) calf preweaning gain by 7.7 g/day. Calves from 2- and 3-year-old dams were more susceptible to pinkeye than calves from older cows. Bull calves had higher (P<.05) pinkeye incidence than heifers. Pinkeye incidence (P<.01) and severity (P<.01) were affected by years in both calves and cows. Repeatability of pinkeye infection between years was near zero in the cows.
