Influence of Intrauterine Events on Postnatal Survival in the Pig

Abstract

Several intrauterine factors influence postnatal survival of pigs. As ovulation rate and litter size increase, intrapartum deaths and pre-weaning mortality increase. Position of the fetus within the uterus influences baby pig size and survival. The influence of microbiologically induced disease on pig survival is dependent more on the time of infection than the specific infectious agent involved. Duration of parturition is directly related to stillbirth rate.
